Parks and Schools

PARKS

There are two parks located in Stonewall and two others close by.  Three are passive parks available essentially for walking or relaxing.

Stonewall Historic Park, located next to Stonewall Elementary School, is a narrow ribbon of parkland along the branch of the South Elkhorn River.  Part of it is developed into a paved walkway, but the area deeper into the park is essentially undeveloped woods.  Much work in removing invasive plant species has been done in the past few years as part of the neighborhood’s Great American Cleanup.  The slope from the school into the park is one of the city’s premier sledding areas.  We recently have established a monarch waystation/butterfly garden near the park entrance.

Higbee Mill Park, on the corner of  Clays Mill Road and Higbee Mill Road, was used for some years largely as a soccer practice field, but the passive use of the park was recently emphasized with the development of a walking path around the field and in its hillier section.

Wellington Park, adjacent to Stonewall on the corner of Clays Mill Road and Wellington Way, is one of the city’s newest parks.  Created as a result of the legal challenge raised by this association and others in the development of the R. J. Reynolds property in the late 1990s, the park has a well-established walking path and a blossoming Woman’s Garden, as well as a popular dog run, one of the three in Lexington.

Nearby Shillito Park, located between Stonewall and Fayette Mall, is easily accessible and by far the largest park near Stonewall.  It is an active park and the most diverse of the parks in its offerings of picnic areas, tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball facilities, and a swimming pool.
